FOR INSURERS & BENEFIT PROVIDERS

Unless someone cares an awful lot about hearing care...

...in Nova Scotia, Insurers & Benefit Providers will continue to fund fragmented, inefficient care — covering symptoms rather than producing measurable health outcomes.

From the insurer’s point of view, hearing loss intersects with benefit design, short-term cost control, and long-term cost consequences:

  • Canadians living with hearing disabilities often have reduced employment income and increased comorbidity burdens that insurance programs ultimately carry. (Canadian Hard of Hearing Association)
  • Untreated hearing loss has been estimated to cost the Canadian health system tens of billions of dollars annually through indirect health burdens (e.g., social isolation, cognitive decline, falls, depression), as well as productivity losses. (Canadian Hard of Hearing Association+1)

Current benefit structures — where hearing aids and related aftercare are frequently paid out-of-pocket — often fail to produce high-value care. Devices may be purchased without appropriate follow-up, leading to under-use or dissatisfaction. This results in claims that appear expensive but do not deliver sustained health gains that reduce overall long-term cost.

When hearing loss goes unaddressed, downstream conditions (e.g., increased risk of injury, mental health care needs, cognitive decline interventions) emerge — all of which are more costly to the system. (Canada)

Insurers providers will continue to fund an inefficient status quo where premiums rise but measurable improvements in health or quality of life lag behind - unless there is a renewed and collective focus on long-term outcomes, and a recognition that healthy hearing is foundational to healthy living.
