FOR EMPLOYERS & WORKPLACES

Unless someone cares an awful lot about hearing care...

...in Nova Scotia, Employers & Workplaces will continue to absorb hidden costs from untreated hearing loss — while missing opportunities to improve productivity, safety, and retention.

Hearing loss doesn’t just affect conversations at home — it affects performance at work, with measurable impacts on the workforce and workplace outcomes.

Key Canadian data show that individuals with hearing disabilities have significantly lower employment rates than the general population — evidence of barriers to hiring, retention, and advancement. (Canadian Audiology Academy)

When employed, many individuals self-report being disadvantaged or under-employed because of their hearing loss. (Canadian Hard of Hearing Association)

Beyond participation rates, there are logical mechanisms through which untreated hearing loss affects workplace performance that are reflected in research:

  • Communication challenges can lead to misinterpretation, mistakes, and reduced efficiency — especially in collaborative settings such as meetings or noisy environments. (Canada)
  • Safety risks increase in environments where auditory cues (alarms, signals) are critical.
  • Isolation from colleagues can hamper professional development and reduce employee engagement, which drives retention challenges. (HR Law Canada)

In sectors with older workforces, or industries with high noise exposure, the need for proactive hearing health policies is even greater. National data show a large proportion of Canadians have worked or do work in noisy environments without adequate protection, a key driver of workplace-related hearing loss. (Statistics Canada)

Employers will continue to pay indirect costs — lower productivity, higher turnover, safety incidents, and unaddressed accommodation needs — unless hearing care is integrated into workplace health strategies, early screening, and supportive policies.
